I love creation and re-creation. Turning someone’s day around with a hair cut or turning someone’s confidence around with a hair color is truly a beautiful thing. I love the math, chemistry and handy work involved. The art of hair color and hair texture can unfold into grand works of art…on our own bodies! What I don’t care for is the business aspect. The part where doing hair becomes not just a hobby anymore, but instead a forged way to make some kind of living from it by selling ideas that sometimes you don’t agree with. This goes for any industry, however, it’s the fact that clients, and worse, your friends and family, start taking advantage of you because they really don’t understand how much time, energy, cost and training goes into your craft. Tattoo artists are maybe the closest professionals that can relate the most. They too have people, usually those closest to them, typically asking for free or very cheap services that can take up to hours of work, and then many times, clients do not understand your creative direction. Because its not just like working on a car with a mapped out way to fix something up, it’s a very personal relationship that instead of riding thin lines of appropriateness, it literally demolishes that line. Sometimes, this makes our work very complicated when not just having to fix a person’s crown and glory, but also having to really listen and get to know our clients and their personal life…even when you don’t want to.
